Abstract

Antibiotic overuse in pediatric healthcare is a growing concern, especially in developing countries like Nepal, where antibiotics are frequently prescribed unnecessarily or used improperly. This study examines the antibiotic prescription habits of pediatricians in government and private hospitals in Chitwan District, Nepal, and evaluates the impact of pharmacist-led parent counseling on pediatric treatment outcomes. Conducted as a cross-sectional observational study, the research comprised two phases: an initial assessment of prescription patterns and a post-counseling evaluation of treatment outcomes and changes in parents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding antibiotic use. Findings reveal differences in prescription habits between hospital types, parental literacy levels also influenced hospital choice, with literate parents favoring private hospitals. After pharmacist-led counseling, significant improvements were observed in parents’ KAP scores, especially in private hospital settings, indicating enhanced awareness about antibiotic misuse, adherence, and the completion of prescribed courses. The intervention effectively reduced inappropriate antibiotic use, improved adherence, and contributed to safer pediatric treatment outcomes. The study underscores the necessity for standardized antibiotic prescription guidelines across both hospital sectors and emphasizes the pivotal role of pharmacists in educating parents to curb antibiotic misuse. By promoting responsible antibiotic use, pharmacist interventions can improve pediatric health outcomes and support broader efforts to combat antibiotic resistance in Nepal.
